What Are Chakras

Have you ever wondered why people tend to hold their hands to their hearts when moved, or when feeling intuitive say something like ,”I feel it in my gut”? This is no coincidence, as different areas in our bodies collect specific feelings and energies. These energy centers are known as Chakras and are based around the body’s organ systems. There are actually hundreds in the body, but there are 7 main Chakras that form a line from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. When Chakras are aligned and open, we feel an overall sense of well being. When these energy vortices close down we are unable to function at our highest potential. Having an awareness of your Chakras can greatly impact the quality and flow of your life.

Our entire universe is made of energy. What a hard concept to grasp observing the physical world through our limited sight! However, this idea is backed by physics. Let’s take a deep look into what our physical bodies are made of to understand this. Our bones, tissues, organs, etc are all made of cells. If we use a microscope and zoom in on these cells we can see the molecules they are comprised of. Inside these molecules are atoms which are made of even smaller particles called protons, neutrons, and electrons. Look further and you can see what protons and neutrons are made of, and if you go even further you will find that we are fundamentally made of an energy flux. It is this energy at the most microscopic level that holds everything together. Our Chakras are areas in our energetic bodies that collect certain frequencies of this energy flux. Your thoughts, life experiences, and emotions all play a part in how these energy bodies act and feel.

Everything in the Universe mirrors each other. Just as we have Chakra centers in our bodies, certain areas on the Earth hold Chakra vortices. Electrical currents called Ley Lines cross Earth like DNA strands. Earth’s Chakras lie on places these currents intersect. Here are the places Earth’s Chakras are believed to be:

We each have a physical body, as well as a “subtle body”, as defined by Indian Religions. This subtle body is comprised of the universal life force energy that surrounds all living beings. It is our spirit, the part of us that feels and interprets incoming messages and energies. In the subtle body is our aura which surrounds our physical being. The Chakras are layers of our aura, areas where your “Chi” or life force energy collect. Chakras are energy vortices in motion, in other words our energetic circulatory system. Just as Mother Earth spins on her axis, each of our Chakras rotate. In fact, the word Chakra comes from the Sanskrit root चक्र , meaning wheel, or cycle.

Each Chakra has its own purpose for keeping us healthy and balanced. The symbols in this image show where each of the 7 main Chakras are generally located on a person’s body.

Root Chakra (red)

The Root Chakra is located at the base of the spine. This grounding Chakra holds our fundamental safety and connection energies. When in balance, one feels secure as basic needs for survival are being met. Shelter, food, and community are important aspects of keeping the Root Chakra balanced. When closed, one may feel flighty and restless being in one place for too long.

Sacral Chakra (orange)

Located in the lower abdomen region, the Sacral Chakra holds your creative and sexual energies. When creativity flows freely this chakra is in alignment. Past sexual traumas can greatly impact the Sacral Chakra, closing off the ability to connect to others sexually.

Solar Plexus Chakra (yellow)

The Solar Plexus Chakra acts as a channel between the lower and higher Chakras. Between the rib cage, right above the belly button, the Solar Plexus is the center of self-esteem and empowerment. When in flow one feels confident and ready to take on the world. An out of balance solar plexus can cause stomach issues.

Heart Chakra (green)

The Heart Chakra houses our love for others and ourselves. Our compassion and empathy lie here. A balanced Heart Chakra makes it easy to connect to those around us, while out of balance can cause anger and relationship issues.

Throat Chakra (blue)

The throat is our communication to the world. Words hold a lot of energy, so a lot of power lies in the way words are used. In balance, we are able to communicate our truth and find the right words to say when we want to. An out of balance Throat Chakra cause a block in communication, making it hard to speak up. This often makes a person appear shy or antisocial.

Third Eye Chakra (Indigo)

The Third Eye or Ajna is the intuitive energy center that lies between the eyebrows. It is associated with clear vision, visualization, intuition, imagination, and insight. The Third Eye affects how we perceive others and others perceive us. When in alignment we have clear vision and are able to externalize our inner world. When blocked we may be fatigued with illusion.

Crown Chakra (Purple)

Located at the top of the head, the Crown Chakra is the first to develop in an infant. It is associated with connection to divinity and consciousness. When the Crown Chakra is in alignment we are operating through our free will and the spirituality that resonates with us. We feel serenity and connection with all. When the Crown Chakra is out of balance, it can translate to brain problems

There are many therapies available to us for alignment and clearing of blockages in each of our Chakras. Some of these include yoga poses directed at specific Chakras, aromatherapy, sound therapy, nature therapy, color therapy, reflexology and Reiki healing. Reiki practitioners use universal life force energy through touch to realign and clear energy blockages.
